Radius Mailing

Radius mailing: postcards to the homes around a job site or a store

Postcards to the homes within a set distance of one address: a job you just finished, a store about to open, a listing that just sold. Drawn tight to a few blocks or wide to miles, to every home or only those that fit.

Neighbors watch each other’s houses. When a roofing crew spends two days on one, the street notices the trucks, and a card arriving the next week that says “we just replaced the roof on the corner” lands with the neighbors already curious. A radius mailing draws a circle around one address and mails the homes inside it, which makes it the natural follow-up to any job a neighborhood can see.

The circle can be tight, the nearest few hundred homes around a single job, or as wide as the distance a store can serve. Inside it, mail every household, or only those that match a selection such as home age or income. A company with several jobs in the same week can mail a circle around each in one order, each with its own version of the card.

Which businesses use radius mailing?

Any business whose work can be seen from the street or whose customers come from close by. Roofers, remodelers, landscapers, pool builders, solar installers and painters mail around finished jobs. Real estate agents mail around a new listing and again when it sells. Restaurants, gyms and stores mail a ring around a new location before it opens. Some contractors mail around a job before it starts, warning the neighbors about the trucks and offering them the same crew while it is on their street.

How big should the radius be?

Big enough to reach 1,000 homes, our smallest order, and no bigger than the area you can serve well. In a dense suburb 1,000 homes may sit within a few streets of the job; in a rural county the circle may run several miles. We return the household count for the radius you name, and you widen or tighten it from there.

Radius or carrier routes?

A carrier route follows the carrier’s path, which rarely matches the shape of the area around a job. A radius follows the job: it takes the homes nearest the address, wherever the route lines fall. Saturation by route has the lower postage; a radius has the tighter fit. For a store’s trade area, where the exact shape matters less, routes are usually the better buy.

The same idea at the scale of a whole neighborhood is saturation mailing by carrier route.

Radius Mailing: questions people ask

What is a radius mailing?

A mailing to the addresses within a set distance of one point, such as a job site, a store or a listing. It reaches the nearest neighbors first, which is why contractors and agents use it to follow up on work the street has already seen.

How do contractors use radius mailing?

They mail the homes around each finished job with a card that names the street, shows a photo of the work and offers the neighbors the same crew. Several jobs from the same week can go out together in one order, each circle with its own version.

Can I mail a radius around several addresses at once?

Yes. Send the addresses and the distance for each. The circles are counted, overlaps are removed so no home gets two cards, and the mailing is quoted as one order.

How many homes are in a one-mile radius?

It depends entirely on density. A one-mile circle can hold a few hundred homes in the country and many thousands in a city. Send the address and we return the actual count for the radius you want.
